Change Your Bad Habits!

Les19-2cWe Welcome 2015 With Open Arms!

Another year is just about to come to a close in a matter of days. It’s so close; we could even measure it in hours and minutes! Christmas has come and gone and in no time at all New Year’s Eve of 2014 will silently slip into the New Year and 2014 will be a thing of the past – just a memory, nothing more! Each year we face the same old thing…out with the old and in with the new.

Each and every year we all reminisce over the great things that happened and fret over the not-so-great things be it; financial, health or fitness related and even personal relationships.

Change Your Bad Habits…

Did you know that most of the unhappy or less than pleasing situations that occurred over the past 12 months happened simply because of “bad habits”? I would like to help you turn things around and possibly make 2015 your best year ever!! Would you mind I if I shared some info with you that will change your life! Well if so…read on…

You probably guessed that I would discuss “Strategic Action Plans” and “setting dates and times up” describing beginning and ending times to “layout your goals.” Well, actually not at this time and here’s why: the most perfect system of planning and gold-setting will take you nowhere if you are anchored down by a “bad set of habits”.

Habits are funny little creatures and almost become invisible to you over even the shortest amount of time “being practiced”. For example – take what we normally call a “bad driver”, one who fails to use Turn Signal Indicators, or fails to stop for pedestrians in cross walks or even worse…parks in a handicap parking spot illegally or leaving a baby or a pet locked in a Hot vehicle on a Hot day for an extended amount of time (it could cause death). All of these are caused by allowing “Bad Habits” to control your actions.

No matter what form of habit it is: good, bad or indifferent, they are all nothing more than acquired behaviors. We all have them and they come in all shapes, sizes and colors. So for right now, take some time and think about some of your habits. Select 2 or 3 to start with, that you feel have the most negative impact on your goal setting and planning. (Hint) Remember that we all have the same amount of time, 168 hours, in a week. You have to become aware of what is creating your “stumbling blocks”.

  1. Become Aware of Your Habits; when do they occur, what are they, what’s the advantage as well as the disadvantages of that habit. What were the feelings you had before the habit kicked in? Your mind will want to create a “justification” that will encourage want to allow the habit to happen.
  2. Develop Alternate Thoughts; No justifying is allowed. Tell yourself that to reach your goal, you MUST stick with your original PLAN. There are no rewards except success itself. Avoid self-pity as nobody really cares if you had a good day or a bad day! If a stumbling block appears – simply jump over it.
  3. Develop Alternative Behavior; to change a bad habit requires you develop a “competing response”. A behavior that is incompatible with your bad habit. Stick to your guns and realize that this competing response will get easier and easier each time it is used.
  4. Build Good Habits; A good habit is the most effective competing response there is to a bad habit. Don’t worry if it is exactly the right thing to do – JUST DO IT! Be persistent. Remember, while the payoff for good habits is long term, it takes time to reach it. I have found that the best rule is to not try to second guess anything. Just keep on doing it and you’ll soon see the light at the end of the tunnel!
  5. Evaluate the Lapses as you are only Human; Sometimes you’ll slip or error in judgment. If you remember that a lapse does not a relapse make. Stay DETERMINED. Evaluate what caused the lapse and learn from it. You will be stronger next time.

I would really love to hear from you with your feelings concerning Bad Habits and how you feel they get started. Also, how you feel that you can become more productive in 2015 and get more mileage out of your resolutions.

Until next time,

Les

Wisconsin Cop: “Today I Stopped Caring”

Yes…this is a fitness site the speaks of health and improvements but I consider “Staying Alive” a big part of good health PLUS Police Lt. Daniel Furseth of the De Forest, WI Police Department wrote his heart out and he deserves all the publicity he can get. It has gone viral already but myself, being in a Security function myself (when not blogging)…although far from being a police officer, I do work with police officers on a daily basis assisting with taking care of irresponsible (unhealthy) human beings. And recently, watching local and national news gets me sick with what's going on in our society today. So I dedicate my post space this week to all of the Police Officers in all of the cities in our good old USA…for their unending dedication to preserve “life” as we know it in spite of the “Thankless” job they face day in and day out.

 Introducing Lt. Daniel Furseth:police_sirens_-635144056898744864

A post from De Forest, Wisconsin police Lt. Daniel Furseth has gone viral in recent days appearing on various police and law enforcement blogs and social media pages. Furseth channels the frustration of police officers who work day in and day out to protect and serve even as many use hyperbole to mis-characterize their actions and motives.

Today, I stopped caring about my fellow man. I stopped caring about my community, my neighbors, and those I serve. I stopped caring today because a once noble profession has become despised, hated, distrusted, and mostly unwanted.

I stopped caring today because parents refuse to teach their kids right from wrong and blame us when they are caught breaking the law. I stopped caring today because parents tell their little kids to be good or “the police will take you away” embedding a fear from year one. Moms hate us in their schools because we frighten them and remind them of the evil that lurks in the world.

They would rather we stay unseen, but close by if needed, but readily available to “fix their kid.” I stopped caring today because we work to keep our streets safe from mayhem in the form of reckless, drunk, high, or speeding drivers, only to be hated for it, yet hated even more because we didn’t catch the drunk before he killed someone they may know.

Nevertheless, we are just another tool used by government to generate “revenue.” I stopped caring today because Liberals hate the police as we carry guns, scare kids, and take away their drugs. We always kill innocent people with unjust violence. We are called bullies for using a Taser during a fight, but are condemned further for not first tasing the guy who pulls a gun on us.

And if we do have to shoot, we are asked “why didn't you just shoot the gun out of their hand?” And when one of us is killed by the countless attacks that do happen (but are rarely reported in the mainstream media) the haters say, “Its just part of the job.” I stopped caring today because Conservatives hate us as we are “the Government.” We try to take away their guns, freedoms, and liberty at every turn.

We represent a “Police State” where “jackbooted badge-wearing thugs” randomly attack innocent people without cause or concern for constitutional rights. We are Waco, Ruby Ridge, and Rodney King all rolled into one lone police officer stopping to help change an old lady’s tire. I stopped caring today as no one wants us around, but instantly demands answers, results, arrests, when a crime takes place.

If a crime isn’t solved within the allocated 60 minutes it takes CSI on television, we are inept, incompetent, or covering something up. If we do get “lucky” it was just that and everyone with a Facebook account can post wonderful comments of how “they” would solve the case and how “we” are not nearly as clever.

I stopped caring today because a video of a cop six states away, from a department that you never heard of, screws up and forgets his oath of honor, thus firing up an internet lynch-mob of cop haters even though 99% of us work twice as hard not to end up in the news and to still be “the good guys.” We are “militarized” because we wear body armor and kevlar helmets when shots are fired or rocks thrown at us and carry scary looking rifles even though everyone knows that they are easier to shoot and are more accurate than a handgun or a shotgun.

I stopped caring today because the culture of today’s instantly connected youth is only there to take and never give back. To never accept responsibility for ones actions, but, to blame everyone else instead of themselves. To ask “what is in it for me?” versus “what can I do for you?”

To idolize gangsters, thugs, sexually promiscuous behavior, and criminals over hard work, dedication, and achievement. To argue that getting stoned should be a right, yet getting a job or an education is a hassle. To steal versus earn, to hate versus help, Yes, I stopped caring today. But tomorrow, I will put my uniform back on and I will care again.

Lt. Daniel Furseth

As for my opinion…his last sentence really got me choked up Below in my comment that I posted on the Social Media.

“Wow! This deserves to go viral. Although I'm only in Security I do appreciate the services of the Police Officers in every department in every city across the USA. They have the most “thankless” job there is. A police officer has the right to defend his or herself when the alleged thief, murderer or worse draws a weapon on them. Who , in a correct state of mind could PROTEST that? Further, when situations occur where the officer is doing his job and doing it right I become sick to my stomach when hearing that a “group” is PROTESTING just because a cop did his job! The “mob” for a lack of better description should use all that built up hate and ignorance and use that energy to teach their kids RESPONSIBILITY, HONESTY and provide these misled children (who carry guns and a desire to steal from others with no regard to life itself), with the KNOWLEDGE to work toward making our neighborhoods, cities and our country a better place to live.”

Please…I really would like to hear your thoughts on this terrible movement that's sweeping the nation. Do you have any suggestions on how to stop this insanity?
